What is the difference between .doc & .docx
What exactly is the difference between the old word document format and the new one?
Firstly lets get one thing straight - the file formats .doc and .docx files are both Microsoft Word file formats, they were created for the use of the Microsoft Word distributions in the office suite.
Microsoft Office 2007 and 2010 save word files as
.docx because they are of a smaller format and use significantly less disk space than it's counterpart.
Microsoft Office 97 to 2003 save word files as
.doc because they are backward compatible with a multitude of word processors, not just the Microsoft Office Suite!
Here at Terrace Road Primary school to save time we do provide both versions on
all our files that are available to download on our website. However Microsoft have also released a compatibility pack which allows users to read office 2007 / 2010 files on Microsoft Office 2003:
